Jily-Inevitable Change-Chapter 3

Chapter Three- The Promise 

James's eyes widened with pain and shock. A sense of horror filled me. "Oh James I didn't-"  I began stretching out a hand towards him but he winced and for the first time in the history of the world he shied away from me. 

I muttered his eyes at a point below my elbow "No I-I get it," and I swaggerer to merlin I've never heard him sound so unsure of himself.

"No no no no no no!!!! NO! I didn't mean-" 

"I get it Evans just drop it!" he snapped and with that he turned on his heel and walked away from me as fast as he could. I called out to him but I still had a feeling that when he got around the corner he had started running.

I stared after him hopelessly having a distinct feeling that I had to do something but at a loss of what to actually do.

"Lily?" It was Lucy who was standing behind me looking worried "You coming?"

 I looked back at the direction James went hopelessly and replied "Yeah."

Sirius approached me after class when me and Lucy were heading towards the great hall for lunch when he yelled "AY EVANS WON'T CHA COME ALONG AND CHAT WITH ME!!!??!!!" 

Lucy recommended I simply ignore him but I put on a brave face and claimed it was okay. 

What surprised me was his less than friendly expression

"Have you seen Prongs?"

"Not since this morning"

"Not since you two talked?"
"Yes..."

"What did you talk about?"

Things..."

"Don't give me that crap."

"Nothing much-"

"What did you say!?!"

"Nothing! Much..."

"Evans."

"Okay okay I may have accidentally said that I hate him..."

He slapped his forehead "You red haired she devil."

"A what?- oh never mind," I went to leave.

"No! You have to apologise!!! NOW"

"What? I said I didn't mean it, and I swear I don't hate him but-"

"NOW"

"But-"

"NOOOOOOOOOWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Okay okay gosh..."

And that was how I found myself mounting the astronomy towers steps (Sirius said he had a 'strong feeling' that he was up here).

I walked in and said softly "Potter...?"

I heard a groan and I looked around in confusion for the source. "Padfoot told you I was up here didn't he?"

His voice was coming from ledge of the tower but I still had no idea where he was "Well he didn't tell me per say...he said he had a 'strong feeling'"

"I should have taken the map," he muttered to himself (which made no sense to me). 

I slowly approached his voice and reached out from where about I thought his head would be "Hey! Just punch me in the nose why don't you!?"

I pulled lightly and the cloak fell away leaving him there rubbing his nose un-happily. 

"Nice invisibility cloak," I told him as I sat down facing him.

He let his hand drop from his nose "Thanks."

There was an awkward pause before I said "I always did wonder how you got around without being caught...would have helped I guess....umm.......Potter?"

It only seemed to grow more awkward as I tried to make it not so.

He looked up at me sadly then and murmured "Why do you hate me Evans?"

I ran my hands through my hair in frustration "Argh! I can't answer that because I-DON'T-HATE-YOU! Get that through your head because I swear, no no, I promise that I don't hate you! I was just angry with you okay?"

He said softly "I was just trying to help you out, I promise, I didn't want to upset you. I only want to be your friend and be able to help you out." He sighed "I don't like seeing you sad."

I looked down at my hands ashamed "Then I'll make you a deal we can be...friends," It wasn't like before when we argued all the time (mostly because I had stopped hanging out with Sev) but it still seemed odd, the idea of us being friends "But you have to forgive me and know that I don't hate you, not even a little bi-"

"Deal!!" he yelled before I even finished. I laughed but stopped when he asked "So do I get to know why you were sitting alone in an abandoned corridor at night crying?"

"No," I said tersely.

"Does Lucy know?"

"No"

"Does Mary know?"

"No"

"Does anyone kno-"

"Po-"

"James," he interrupted giving a small smile "Come on I'm your friend now." 

"James its my problem and I'll tell someone when I want to."

"So that's a no?"

I hesitantly answered "Yes."

He let out an angry huff of air "Fine okay just-just promise me that if it gets to much you'll tell someone. It doesn't have to be me or anything just please!"

I thought on it and then said solemnly "I promise."
